Alumnus John Sexton — who worked for famed photographer Ansel Adams — has one of his own photographs featured in the new software running Apple iPhone and iPad.

Published: Sep 23, 2013 | @Cypress Online
John Sexton is one of Cypress College’s most-successful alumni. After all, the man is trusted to print Ansel Adams’ prized collection of photographs. Having his own photograph included in Apple’s iOS is just plain cool, though.

The operating system, which was released on Wednesday, offers Sexton’s image of Tenaya Lake as one of the default wallpaper options.

“If you have an Apple iOS device running iOS 7 you have a limited edition image 1/250,000,000!” Sexton wrote to friends on his Facebook page. Continue reading “Alumnus John Sexton’s Photograph Featured in Apple’s New iPhone, iPad Software”

Campanile Turns Blue for Autism Awareness

Cypress College campanile in blue to raise awareness of autism

Cypress College and its sister institution the School of Continuing Education will “Light It Up Blue” to raise awareness about autism. The effort commemorates World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and Autism Awareness Month.

Published: Apr 1, 2013 | @Cypress Online
This story is special to me on many levels. For starters, it represents the first time we at Cypress College lit the campanile is a color for a cause. That alone is special. It generated a strong positive reaction. The minute I saw world landmarks lit in blue a year earlier, I knew we had to pull this off. Here’s to all the parents of children with autism.

Cypress College is participating by lighting its iconic campanile blue. The tower is located in the middle of the college and is visible from off campus as well. SCE’s Cypress campus will also participate by lighting their flag pole, and both he North Orange County Community College District (second-floor entrance) and the Wilshire Center at Fullerton College will also be lit in blue. While this isn’t a substantial story, I was able to connect an historic event with the campus in a couple of ways. In addition, the photographs are mine. Plus, it’s space related. Win. Win. Win.

Dr. Michael J. Kasler — who learned English as a second language, stocked grocery-store shelves in one of his first jobs, and later became Cypress College president — is spending his final day on campus prior to retirement.

Published: June 13, 2012 | @Cypress Online
Why is this one a favorite? I believe it captures Dr. Kasler story well. I was always impressed that English was his second language and that he once stocked grocery-store shelves for a living. Yes, people who have humble beginnings like that can become college presidents.

An unwavering advocate of students, Dr. Kasler was focused on their success throughout his 38 years in education. He enters retirement after 20 years at Cypress College. Continue reading “Dr. Kasler Spending Final Day on Campus After 20 Years”

Dr. Kasler Tells Campus Community He’ll Retire at Semester’s End

Things were rolling along quite well in the summer of 2007. For some perspective on just how long ago that was, the first iPhone had just shipped, the Anaheim Ducks were the newly crowned Stanley Cup champions, and the cost to attend community college had recently dipped to $20 per unit.

Another significant milestone that summer: Dr. Mike Kasler became the 10th president of Cypress College.

This morning, 4 1/2 years later, Dr. Kasler announced at a campus-wide employee meeting that this will be his last semester at the college after nearly 20 years on the campus. Continue reading “Dr. Kasler Tells Campus Community He’ll Retire at Semester’s End”

Wildcats Hockey Club Dons Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When the nearly 200 Wildcats Hockey Club players hit the ice to open their season this weekend, they did so clad in the pinkest of pink jerseys.

Published: October 4, 2011 | Wildcats Hockey Club and picked up by multiple news organizations.
This is a favorite because the cause hits close to home and because I think it’s important to my boys (and other athletes) to understand the privilege they have and to help promote awareness. In addition, this news release generated good coverage for the club — including a nice spread with multiple photographs in the Orange County Register — so it was successful in meeting our goals.

That’s a pretty bold statement from a group of kids playing in such a tough sport. But, it’s done with good reason.

All 13 teams in the Wildcats Hockey Club agreed to participate in the month-long “Wildcats Hockey Loves Moms: Shooting for a Cure 2011” awareness event. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Wildcats efforts also coincide with the National Hockey League’s Hockey Fights Cancer awareness campaign.
