TVB (USA) Visits Cypress College to Report on Mortuary Science Bachelor’s Degree

TVB (USA), a Chinese-language channel appearing across the country, visited Cypress College on Tuesday to prepare a news report about Cypress College’s participation in the California Community College’s pilot bachelor’s degree program. Cypress College’s Mortuary Science Program was one of the 15 programs selected to represent the state’s 112 community colleges in the first-of-it’s-kind effort in the Golden State. Mortuary Science Selected by NOCCCD Trustees as District’s Applicant for Bachelor’s Degree Pilot Program

Mortuary Science — a program so well regarded that the HBO series “Six Feet Under” repeatedly referenced Cypress College to add authenticity — will be the North Orange County Community College District’s applicant for California’s pilot program to award baccalaureate degrees at community colleges. Lasanthi Benedict, who is enrolled in Cliff Lester’s “Available Light” Photo 118 course, had photographs from an eventful whale-watching trip picked up by media outlets — including NBC Nightly News and the Associated Press — across the globe.

Dr. Simpson took the challenge this afternoon during a day-long meetings as the College prepared for Monday’s start of the academic year. Educator Rosas is Recipient of 2014 Outstanding Alumna Award

Reyna Rosas ended up at Cypress College because that’s what she told a Los Angeles Superior Court judge was her intention. Her statement — and, the way Rosas tells the story, it was more declaration than promise — became reality thanks to the intervention of a stranger, who paid Rosas’ tuition. In 1980, Rosas took a job working overnight in a fast food restaurant as employment and a safe haven for shelter, and showered in the campus locker room before morning classes. To supplement her income and help pay for classes, she also worked on campus.

Smithsonian Air & Space Museum to Exhibit ‘The Great Picture’

On Saturday, the Smithsonian opens an exhibit of a Cypress College-inspired, Guinness Book of World Records recognized photograph.

The photograph, known as The Great Picture, was created at the former Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, by turning an abandoned hanger into the world’s largest pinhole camera.

The “Great Picture” project really captures the imagination. It certainly did mine. I had the opportunity to write about this world-record effort multiple times at Cypress College. Of the myriad articles, this one is my favorite.

“I am very happy and proud of the (exhibit) and need to share it with the Cypress College family since the original impetus for the project started here in our Photography Department,” said Rob Johnson, one of six artists who spearheaded the project. “As many of you might recall, this image was originally created by The Legacy Project, a group of six photographic artists, of which I and three others who taught here at CC (including Jerry Burchfield) were charter members.” Continue reading “Smithsonian Air & Space Museum to Exhibit ‘The Great Picture’”
