GWC DANCE ENSEMBLE ONE OF FOUR US TEAMS
SELECTED TO COMPETE IN MEXICO CITY
The Golden West College Dance Ensemble has been selected from
hundreds of entries to perform at the Contemporary Choreographic
Composition Competition in Mexico City.
The competition will be held at the Teatro de la Danza (Theater
of Dance) from November 5-10. Dances selected for the finals will
be performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (The Palace of Fine
Arts) on Saturday, November 13.
We are extremely proud of our students for their accomplishments
and excited for the wonderful opportunity they have in Mexico,
said Dr. Kenneth Yglesias, president of Golden West College. We
wish them the best in their competition. I know that they will be
excellent ambassadors for the college, Huntington Beach,
California and the United States.
GWCs dance troupe is headed by Nannette Brodie, an associate
professor at Golden West and an accomplished professional
choreographer whose work has been performed in concert, film and
video throughout the Western United States and in New York.
It is an outstanding achievement to be one of four groups chosen
from the United States for this prestigious presentation, said
Brodie, a Long Beach resident. It¹s a wonderful opportunity for
cultural exchange and good will for our dancers. The epitome of
professional development is to perform in an international
arena.
Brodie has choreographed a work called Emigré² for the event.
Inspired by personal stories, media images and research, it was
created by Brodie as a response to the struggle and sometimes
painful adjustment of refugees in our society. An eclectic
mixture of several contemporary composers incorporating string
quartets, electronic sounds and voices provide the music for the
composition.
The work was supported by a grant from the California Council for
the Humanities.
Six Golden West College dance students will perform in the
competition. They are: Sher Borrell, of Newport Beach; Allison
Clark, of Newport Beach; Kelly Duncan, of Long Beach; Javier
Gonzalez, of Riverside; Erica Jimenez, of Lake Elsinore; and
Taryn Young, of Long Beach.
In 1997, Brodies dance students were invited to the same
international competition as the only community college from the
United States.
As was the case with the successful 1997 trip, the students are
in need of funds to support the trip.
A fundraiser scheduled for Monday, November 1 will feature an
informative lecture and a preview demonstration of Emigré.² It
will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theater, located
in GWCs Recreation Education Building Room 201.
GWC is located at 15744 Golden West Street in Huntington Beach,
nestled between Edinger and McFadden avenues and Golden West and
Gothard streets just off the San Diego (405) Freeway and
minutes from Huntington Beachs picturesque shoreline.
The event also includes a reception for the dancers and live
musical entertainment. Tickets can be reserved in advance or
purchased at the door. General admission is $10 and $5 for
current Golden West College students.
Information is available by calling (714) 895-8281 or by sending
e-mail to info@gwc.cccd.edu. Tax-deductible donations may also be
made through the Golden West College Foundation, which can be
